Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok), during his tenure as Governor of Jakarta, managed to reduce the poverty rate in the capital. Before his term (September 2014), the poverty rate reached 4.09 percent, with 413,000 people living in poverty. By 2016, the poverty rate had decreased to 3.75 percent, with only 389,000 people living in poverty. The poverty rate in Jakarta reached its lowest level in September 2015, at 3.61 percent, with 369,000 people living in poverty. During Ahok's leadership, the population fluctuated slightly.
The increase in the number of impoverished people was influenced by a rise in the Poverty Line (PL). Poor residents are those whose average per capita monthly expenditure falls below the poverty line. Jakarta's poverty line increased by 2.02 percent from March 2016 to September 2016. In addition, the large number of migrants from other regions contributed to the difficulty in lowering Jakarta's poverty rate.
Basuki Tjahaja Purnama was inaugurated as Governor of Jakarta on November 19, 2014, replacing Joko Widodo, who had become President of the Republic of Indonesia. Then, on Wednesday, May 9th, in the trial for blasphemy, the governor, often called Ahok, was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison.
