Warning! Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Afternoon (Friday, February 28, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, February 28, 2025, at 4:03 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 71 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 700 meters above the peak or 2,025 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 64 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on February 28, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 19 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 21-28 millimeters and durations of 32-78 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 51 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-9 millimeters and durations of 14-77 seconds, and 6 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 42-99 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,724 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (817 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 735 times.
