Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Column Reaches 1,000 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 06:39 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 6 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,000 meters above the peak (2,087 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on March 20, 2025, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 274 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 6-34 millimeters and durations of 45.57-78.55 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-17 millimeters, S-P intervals of 14.65-22.82 seconds, and durations of 62.43-69.05 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 1-5 millimeters, predominantly 3 millimeters.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,312 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,054 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 44 times.
