Warning! Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon (Thursday, September 12, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 5:55 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 19 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 800 meters above the peak or 2,384 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 137 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on September 12, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA showed 2 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 2.9-7.4 millimeters and durations of 137-328 seconds.

Then, there were 3 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 4.4-11.8 millimeters and durations of 20-24 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.2-2.9 millimeters and durations of 120-126 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,667 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,487 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 641 times.
