Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Evening (Wednesday, February 5, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at 3:40 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 20 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 600 meters above the peak (1,925 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 78 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on February 5, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 23 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 17-28 millimeters and durations of 44-129 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 24 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-11 millimeters and durations of 14-57 seconds, and 3 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 4-28 millimeters and durations of 64-110 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,048 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (532 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 450 times.
