Mount Marapi Erupts on Friday Afternoon, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Friday, June 7, 2024, at 1:44 PM WIB. This is the second eruption in the last week.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 500 meters above the peak (3,391 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 3.5 millimeters and a duration of 42 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIB on June 7, 2024, showed 1 eruption/explosion with an amplitude of 3 millimeters and a duration of 72 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 18 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 1-6.2 millimeters and durations of 34-220 seconds, and 5 hybrid/multiple-phase earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.5-5 millimeters, s-p 2.5 seconds, and durations of 15-23 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi, and climbers/visitors/tourists, not to enter or carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 924 volcanic eruptions/explosions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (373 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 179 times.
