More than a month since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, thousands of civilians have been injured and killed. This has led many countries to open their doors to Ukrainians seeking safety and protection.
Most recently, the United States (US) has stated its readiness to accommodate up to 100,000 Ukrainians affected by the conflict with Russia. US President Joe Biden said that the reception of Ukrainian refugees should not be burdened on Poland, Romania, and Germany. Because, according to Biden, Ukrainian refugees are an international responsibility and the US, as a leader, should share this burden.
According to data from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 3.67 million Ukrainian citizens have fled to neighboring countries as a result of the invasion from February 24 to March 23, 2022. The details are: 672,130 refugees throughout February, and 3 million throughout March.
It is recorded that the majority, or 2.17 million, of these citizens fled to Poland. This number accounts for 59.15% of the total Ukrainian refugees.
Next, 563,510 Ukrainian citizens fled to Romania. Then, the Republic of Moldova became the next destination for Ukrainian refugees, with 374,050 citizens.
Hungary is next as a destination for Ukrainian refugees, with 330,870 citizens. Then, Russia and Slovakia became destinations for Ukrainian refugees, with 271,250 and 260,240 citizens respectively. Meanwhile, 5,560 Ukrainian citizens fled to Belarus.
