COVID-19 statistics in Asia this week still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. This week, 14 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while 12 others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Nepal, Afghanistan, Japan, Sri Lanka, and Saudi Arabia. The total deaths in these five countries as of Tuesday, August 2, 2022, amounted to 707, with a weekly growth exceeding 71.43 percent.
Nepal ranks first, with a weekly increase in deaths growing by 266.67 percent. Worldometer recorded 11 deaths in this country, an increase compared to the previous week's reported three deaths.
Next is Afghanistan, which recorded 150 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. The death toll in this country was reported as 10 more than the previous week's four deaths. Deaths in Japan increased by 125.09%, Sri Lanka recorded 19 deaths (up 72.73%), and deaths in Saudi Arabia increased by 71.43%.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan, with 655 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 125.09% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, Taiwan recorded 331 deaths (down 22.12%), India recorded 322 deaths (down 0.92%), Iran (Islamic Republic) recorded 314 deaths (up 53.92%), and Thailand recorded 228 deaths (up 29.55%).
Total deaths in Asia over the past seven days reached 2,525. This accounts for 18.74 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 13,471. The death toll in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 2,073 deaths.
