The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 7.62 million cases by Friday, April 28, 2023. The Republic of Niger ranks first, with a weekly increase in Omicron cases growing by 51.9 percent. GISAID recorded 120 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 51.9 percent compared to the previous day.
Oman follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, the increase in Omicron cases in this country grew by 16.36 percent. A total of 384 new Omicron cases were reported. Daily statistics show a 16.36 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, which recorded 330 cases.
Next is Ukraine with 2,188 additional Omicron cases (up 10.78%), Romania with 10,673 additional Omicron cases (up 4.51%), and Norway with a 3.57 percent increase in Omicron cases, totaling 34,278 compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 36,058, a 0.95 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
