Several Corporations Contribute to the Generation of Single-Use Plastic Waste

Several global corporations are considered to have contributed significantly to the generation of single-use plastic waste. This is because these corporations produce polymers, which are also found in single-use plastics.

According to a Minderoo Foundation report, ExxonMobil was the largest contributor to single-use plastic waste in 2019, at 5.9 million metric tons. Dow, a US-based chemical producer, was second, contributing 5.6 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste.

The Chinese petrochemical company, Sinopec, followed, contributing 5.3 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste. Indorama Ventures and Saudi Aramco each contributed 4.6 million metric tons and 4.3 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste, respectively.

According to the Minderoo Foundation, the significant contribution of companies to single-use plastic waste is due to the lack of regulation and transparency regarding this issue over the past few decades. Governments have tended to focus on companies that sell plastic products.
