The Ministry of Health recorded that 145 sequences of new variants of concern (VOC) of the Covid-19 virus had been detected in Indonesia until June 13, 2021. Of this number, 104 sequences were the Delta variant (B.1.617.2).
Seventy-five sequences of this variant originating from India were found in Central Java. Twenty sequences were detected in Jakarta. Three Delta variant sequences were detected each in South Sumatra, Central Kalimantan, and East Kalimantan.
The Ministry of Health also recorded 36 sequences of the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7) detected in Indonesia. This variant, originating from the UK, was most commonly found in Jakarta, with 24 sequences.
Two Alpha variant sequences each were found in North Sumatra, West Java, and East Java. Provinces with one sequence each include Riau Islands, South Sumatra, Riau, Central Java, Bali, and South Kalimantan.
Meanwhile, five sequences of the Beta variant (B.1.351) from South Africa were detected in two provinces. The details are four sequences in Jakarta and one sequence in East Java.
These three new corona variants have a higher transmission rate. As a result, the potential for patients requiring hospital treatment also increases.
To prevent the spread of corona, the public is urged to diligently implement the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands with soap. In addition, the public is encouraged to avoid crowds and reduce mobility.
