Based on the Indonesian Nutritional Status Survey (SSGI) by the Ministry of Health, the prevalence of stunting in West Papua reached 30% in 2022. This figure ranks the province 6th nationally in terms of stunting prevalence.
The prevalence of stunting in West Papua increased by 3.8 percentage points from the previous year. In 2021, the prevalence of stunting in the province was 26.2%.
Five regencies/cities had a stunting prevalence above the West Papua provincial average. The remaining eight regencies/cities were below the provincial average.
Pegunungan Arfak Regency recorded the highest prevalence of stunting in West Papua, reaching 51.5% in 2022. The number of stunted children in this regency drastically increased from 40.1% the previous year.
The areas with the next highest prevalence of stunting in West Papua in 2022 were Tambrauw Regency (39.1%) and Sorong Selatan Regency (36.7%).
Teluk Bintuni Regency recorded the lowest prevalence of stunting in West Papua, at 22.8%. Following this were Sorong Regency (23.8%) and Teluk Wondama Regency (26.1%).
