Many women are diagnosed with depression after childbirth, commonly known as postpartum depression. Postpartum depression causes mothers to feel hopeless, sad, and confused; in more severe cases, they may even refuse to care for their children.
A case study in the United States conducted by Onepoll in collaboration with the health brand Intimina showed that 92% of mothers experiencing postpartum depression admitted that it was the most draining condition they had ever experienced.
Furthermore, 22% of those experiencing these depressive symptoms were not properly diagnosed by their obstetrician-gynecologists (OBGYNs).
Intimina states that it takes 2.5 months to physically recover after childbirth. However, three out of five respondents felt they did not recover emotionally for more than three months.

Almost a quarter of women experience mood swings and say that coping with them is far more difficult than the birthing process itself.
Regarding emotional problems, firstly, 53% of respondents experienced mood changes. Secondly, 50% felt helpless. Thirdly, 42% felt guilty.
Mothers also face physical problems. The most common is weight change, experienced by 52% of respondents.
Secondly, mothers also struggle with pain or discomfort during breastfeeding (45%). Thirdly, recovery from a cesarean section (35%). Intimina also mentions that some women experience fluctuations in sexual desire (30%).
Danela Zagar, Intimina's Global Brand Manager, says that postpartum depression experienced by women is still not well understood by many.
“This is why we always encourage women to speak openly about this issue, because it affects many women and is a reality,” said Danela in the research report.
The online survey was conducted among 2,000 mothers who had given birth in the United States. The findings were published on October 11, 2021.
