According to data from the Global Cancer Observatory, there were 220,266 cases of cancer found in women in Indonesia throughout 2022.

The most common findings were breast cancer, with 66,271 cases, equivalent to 30% of the total findings.

Next in line were cervical cancer with 36,964 cases (17%) and ovarian cancer with 15,130 cases (7%).

Then there were findings of colorectal cancer, or cancer of the large intestine and rectum, with 13,773 cases (6%), and lung cancer with 9,797 cases (4%).

Meanwhile, findings of other types of cancer collectively reached 78,331 cases (36%).

Now, the Indonesian government plans to strengthen breast cancer screening programs. According to Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, early detection of breast cancer can reduce the risk of death.

"With current technology, if breast cancer is detected at stage one, it can be cured in 90% of cases. However, if it's detected at stage three, the mortality rate is 90%," said Budi at a working meeting with the IX Commission of the House of Representatives on Monday (19/1/2026).

"If we massively implement breast cancer screening, I believe we can save many lives, as breast cancer is the number one killer," he added.
