Reports of Violence against Women in Indonesia Increased in 2025

Throughout 2025, the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) received 4,472 reports of violence against women in Indonesia.

The number of reports increased by 7% compared to 2024, reaching a record high in recent years.

Komnas Perempuan Chairperson Maria Ulfah Anshor also stated that the actual number of cases might be higher than recorded.

"The victims who report are an iceberg phenomenon. So, if only 4,472 report, the actual violence occurring in society is much greater," Maria said during a meeting with Commission XIII of the House of Representatives on Thursday (January 15, 2026).

In addition to reflecting the high prevalence of gender-based violence in Indonesia, Maria believes that this increase in complaints indicates that more victims are daring to report.

"This aligns with the strengthening of public awareness and legitimacy, as well as the presence of several laws," Maria said.

Maria stated that the increasing number of complaints cannot be interpreted as the success of the handling system. Instead, this condition indicates a structural burden that victims still have to bear, with Komnas Perempuan becoming one of the main references for complaints.
