The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.9 million cases by Friday, December 9, 2022. New Caledonia recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 350 percent. GISAID recorded 27 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 58.82 percent compared to the previous day.
Finland follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, Omicron cases in this country grew by 23.31 percent. Daily figures show a 3.14 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, which recorded 17,087 cases.
Next is Mauritius, with a 4,454 increase in Omicron cases (up 9.6 percent). Omicron cases in Colombia increased by 8.79 percent to 11,023 cases compared to the previous week, and in the Philippines, Omicron cases increased by 6.54 percent to 12,024 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases recorded to date is 29,829, a 0.01 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
