The World Health Organization (WHO) noted that four new variants of concern (VOCs) of the coronavirus had spread to hundreds of countries by Thursday, June 29, 2021. The Delta variant (B.1.617.2) is the most aggressive, with a transmission rate 97% higher than the original version. This variant, first identified in India, has spread to 96 countries.
Meanwhile, the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7) from the UK has been detected in 172 countries. The Beta variant (B.1.351) from South Africa follows with spread to 120 countries. The Gamma variant (P.1) from Brazil has also been recorded in 72 countries. Seven other countries have detected lineages, but their types are yet unknown.
Quoting Antara, cases of the Delta variant have been recorded in nine regencies/cities in West Java. Some of these areas include Bandung Regency and City, Sumedang Regency, and Depok City.
West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil stated that the Delta variant is affecting younger patients. This is based on reports from Boromeus Hospital in Bandung.
Various coronavirus variants can be managed by diligently implementing health protocols. The rate of transmission can be suppressed by wearing masks, maintaining distance, washing hands with soap, avoiding crowds, and reducing mobility.
