Parents are responsible for understanding and meeting their children's nutritional needs from an early age. Toddlers whose nutritional needs are not met are at risk of various health problems and may even experience growth failure or stunting.
According to a Kompas Research and Development (Litbang Kompas) poll, 40.9% of respondents stated that their family environment strives to meet children's nutritional needs by providing exclusive breastfeeding for infants under six months old.
As many as 30.7% of respondents checked their toddlers' growth and health at community health centers (posyandu) or public health centers (puskesmas) at least once a month.
Furthermore, 13.8% of respondents provided breast milk plus nutritious complementary foods (MPASI) for toddlers, such as biscuits, baby porridge, and rice porridge.
Only 10% of respondents reported that their family environment routinely provides food supplements and vitamins. Another 4.6% of respondents did not know how to meet the nutritional needs of toddlers.
This survey was conducted through telephone interviews with 506 respondents spread across 34 Indonesian provinces from April 4-6, 2023.
The survey sample was randomly determined from Litbang Kompas panel respondents according to the population proportion in each province. The survey has a 95% confidence level with a margin of error of approximately 4.36%.
According to the Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI) from the Ministry of Health, the national prevalence of stunting among toddlers was still at 21.6% in 2022.
Although this represents an improvement, the figure does not yet meet the World Health Organization (WHO) standard, which sets the ideal stunting prevalence below 20%.
To achieve this standard, President Jokowi has set a target to reduce the rate of growth failure or stunting among Indonesian children to 14% by 2024.
"(The target of 14% stunting prevalence) must be achieved. I am confident that with our collective strength, we can all work together," said President Jokowi, as reported by Katadata.co.id (January 25, 2023).
Jokowi believes that reducing stunting rates can be achieved, among other things, through public education and outreach regarding children's food and nutrition.
