Chegg's findings in The Global Student Survey 2025 reveal various mental health challenges faced by global students in 2024.
The results show that more than half reported experiencing insufficient sleep. Furthermore, over 40% of students worldwide also experienced daily anxiety and academic exhaustion.
The following are the mental health challenges faced by global students in 2024:
- Not sleeping enough: 55%
- Experiencing daily feelings of anxiety: 44%
- Experiencing academic burnout: 43%
- Not being able to practice healthy habits: 40%
- Trouble meeting new people/making friends: 35%
- Not feeling supported by my university: 16%
- Engaged in unhealthy behaviours: 14%
- I feel demeaned or disrespected by professors: 11%
- None of these: 9%
- Prefer not to say: 1%
"Globally, more than two in five of students (43%) experienced academic burnout in 2024, with rates exceeding 50% in Australia, Indonesia, Mexico, South Korea, and Spain," said Chegg.
According to Chegg, although mental health remains a challenge for students, the percentage has decreased compared to 2023.
In 2023, 59% of students experienced insufficient sleep, 54% experienced daily anxiety, and 46% experienced academic exhaustion.
The Global Student Survey 2025 was conducted by Chegg in collaboration with Yonder Consulting. The online survey took place from October 1-23, 2024, and involved 11,706 respondents aged 18-21 from 15 countries. The number of respondents per country ranged from 500 to 1,002.
