The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has compiled a list of provinces with the highest stunting rates in Indonesia based on the 2024 Indonesian Nutritional Status Survey (SSGI).
West Java ranks first with the highest number of stunted toddlers, reaching 638,000.
The next five provinces with the highest number of stunting cases nationally are Central Java with 485,893 toddlers, East Java with 430,780 toddlers, North Sumatra with 316,456 toddlers, East Nusa Tenggara with 214,143 toddlers, and Banten with 209,600 toddlers.
"If we can reduce stunting cases in these six provinces by 10%, we can reduce the national rate by 4-5%. Because 50% of stunted children are in these six regions," said Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin while presenting the results of the SSGI 2024 on Monday (26/5/2025), as quoted from the Kemenkes website.
Budi stated that nationally, the prevalence of stunting decreased from 21.5% in 2023 to 19.8% in 2024. The national stunting prevalence target for 2025 is a further decrease to 18.8%.
By 2029, the government aims to reduce the national stunting rate to 14.2%, in line with the target of the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN).
Therefore, in addition to reducing stunting cases in the six provinces, Budi emphasized the importance of intervention from the pre-natal period, focusing on 11 specific interventions in the health sector.
"Stunting doesn't occur after birth, but even during pregnancy. Therefore, intervention for pregnant mothers is crucial. Pregnant mothers must not suffer from malnutrition or anemia," he explained.
