Based on Regulation of the Minister of National Education No. 16 of 2007, a teacher is considered qualified if they have a Bachelor's (S1) or Diploma IV (D4) degree in the subject they teach.
According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in the 2023/2024 academic year, the national percentage of teachers meeting academic qualifications reached 97.33%, an increase of 0.38 percentage points compared to the previous academic year.
However, when broken down by education level, the increase only occurred for teachers teaching at the elementary (SD) and junior high school (SMP) levels.
The proportion of qualified teachers at the elementary school level reached 96.85% in the 2023/2024 academic year, an increase of 0.67 percentage points compared to the 2022/2023 academic year.
In the same period, qualified junior high school teachers increased by 0.12 percentage points to 98.04%.
Meanwhile, the percentage of teachers meeting academic qualifications at the senior high school (SMA) and vocational high school (SMK) levels decreased, as shown in the graph.
BPS data shows there were 3.03 million teachers throughout Indonesia in the 2023/2024 academic year. 1.62 million teachers taught at the elementary school level, 715,000 at the junior high school level, 355,000 at the senior high school level, and 339,000 at the vocational high school level.
