Weekly Cigarette Consumption of Indonesian Smokers 2024

According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), in March 2024, 22.32% of the Indonesian population aged 5 and over smoked daily, and 1.68% smoked occasionally.

Generally, this group of smokers smoked an average of 87.45 cigarettes per week.

Specifically, the majority, or 66.68% of smokers, consumed more than 60 cigarettes per week on average. 21.22% smoked 30-59 cigarettes, 7.6% smoked 15-29 cigarettes, 3.82% smoked 7-14 cigarettes, and only 0.69% smoked 1-6 cigarettes per week.

According to Feni Fitriani Taufik, Head of the Smoking Issues Working Group from the Indonesian Respiratory Doctors Association (PDPI), there is no safe limit to cigarette consumption.

"There is no safe limit to the smoke inhaled by those around them. Whether it's one cigarette or a pack, if DNA damage occurs and continues, the disease process will progress," said Feni, as reported by *Antara* on Monday (29/5/2023).

Feni also stated that besides health problems, smoking habits can create an economic burden.

According to BPS data, in March 2024, household expenditure on cigarettes in Indonesia reached 12.57% of total per capita expenditure per month.
