11 Reasons Indonesian Travelers Still Travel Despite the Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic did not deter some Indonesians from traveling to various regions within the country. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the majority, or 30.98%, of domestic tourists in 2020 traveled to visit friends or family.

This percentage increased from 20.72% the previous year. As many as 25.21% of domestic tourists traveled for leisure and recreation. This percentage also increased from 22.8% in 2019.

Furthermore, 7.42% of domestic tourists went home in 2020. This is a decrease from 8.43% in 2019.

Domestic tourists with the fewest travel purposes were those traveling for sports or arts; this accounted for only 0.9% of the total number of domestic tourists who traveled in 2020.

For information, the number of domestic tourist trips decreased by 28.19% to 518.59 million in 2020. This was due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which hit Indonesia in early 2020, thus restricting people's travel activities.
