IQAir compiled a list of the 10 cities with the worst air pollution in the world on Thursday (April 25, 2024). Two of these cities are in Indonesia.
Jakarta ranked fifth on the list of the world's most polluted cities, with an air quality index (AQI) of 134 points at 3 PM WIB today. Medan followed in seventh place with an index of 108 points.
Based on daily averages, Jakarta's air pollution tends to be higher than Medan's, as shown in the graph. However, the daily average air quality in both cities falls within the moderate to unhealthy range.
Over the past month, Jakarta's worst air quality was recorded on July 2, 2024, with an index of 162 points (unhealthy level). Medan's worst air quality was similar, reaching 163 points on July 21, 2024.

Jakarta's best air quality (lowest pollution) was recorded on July 6-7, 2024, with indices of 68 points each, falling into the moderate category.
Medan's lowest pollution was recorded on July 7, 2024, with an index of 69 points, also in the moderate category.
According to IQAir, the air quality index ranges from 0 to 500, although it can exceed 500 in cases of extremely high pollution. Good air quality ranges from 0 to 50, while readings above 300 are considered hazardous.
AQI readings are based on the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to calculate the AQI and associate color categories with the index.
The air quality series measures levels of PM2.5, PM1, PM10, and carbon dioxide, using PM2.5, or fine particulate matter, to determine the AQI.
Here are the health categories for the AQI index:
* 0-50: Good
* 51-100: Moderate
* 101-150: Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
* 151-200: Unhealthy
* 201-300: Very Unhealthy
* 301-500: Hazardous
