The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 2.02 million cases by Thursday, March 10, 2022. Tunisia recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 800 percent. GISAID recorded nine deaths from Omicron in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 800 percent compared to the previous day.
Algeria follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, the increase in Omicron cases in this country grew by 600 percent. Daily figures, however, show a 12.5 percent decrease in new Omicron cases compared to the previous day, which recorded 16 deaths.
Furthermore, the increase in Omicron cases in Sweden rose by 183.04 percent to 23,761 cases compared to the previous week. Syria saw a 49-case increase (up 133.33%), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo saw a 110 percent increase to 105 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 7,630, a 0.17 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, the number of Omicron cases in Indonesia has continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
