This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to the persistent increase in the number of deaths. This week, four countries recorded an increase in deaths, while two others recorded deaths but with smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Hong Kong, Lebanon, South Korea, Indonesia, and India. The total deaths in these five countries as of Thursday, May 11, 2023, amounted to 420, with a weekly growth exceeding -27.5 percent.
Hong Kong ranks first, with a weekly increase in deaths growing by 59.46 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded 59 deaths, a 3.28 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Lebanon follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in this country grew by 25 percent. The number of deaths reported in this country was 5, while the previous week recorded 4 deaths.
The other countries in the top five are South Korea with 66 deaths (up 17.86%), Indonesia with deaths up 17.57%, and India with deaths down 27.5%.
Looking at the number of death reports, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Indonesia with 174 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 17.57% compared to the previous week. Following that, India had the second highest number of deaths with 116 (down 27.5%), Japan with 98 deaths (down 35.95%), South Korea with 66 deaths (up 17.86%), and Hong Kong with 59 deaths (up 59.46%).
Total COVID-19 deaths in Asia over the past seven days were recorded at 518. This accounts for 28.6 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 1,811. The number of deaths in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation, which was 558.
