This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas show a decrease in deaths in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. Eight countries reported an increase in deaths this week, while eight others reported fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, Paraguay, and Canada. The total deaths in these five countries for the week ending August 21, 2022, were 484, representing a weekly growth of over 36.71 percent.
Argentina had the highest increase, with weekly deaths growing by 260 percent. Worldometer recorded 36 deaths in the country, up from 10 the previous week.
Trinidad and Tobago followed with a weekly increase in deaths of 162.5 percent. The country reported 21 deaths, compared to 8 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, Costa Rica saw a 100% increase in deaths, Paraguay reported 91 deaths (a 56.9% increase), and Canada reported 324 deaths (a 36.71% increase).
Looking at the total number of reported deaths, the United States had the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days, with 2,383. This represents a 2.26% decrease compared to the previous week. Brazil followed with 1,140 deaths (a 22.34% decrease), Mexico with 351 deaths (a 21.48% decrease), Canada with 324 deaths (a 36.71% increase), and Peru with 319 deaths (a 5.63% increase).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 5,103. This accounts for 34.64 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 14,730. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which totaled 5,443.
