This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Fourteen countries recorded increased deaths this week, while six others reported deaths, albeit in smaller numbers.
Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Israel, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Lebanon, and Singapore. The total deaths in these five countries for the week of October 23, 2022, amounted to 69, representing a weekly growth exceeding 58.33 percent.
Israel ranks first, with a 1,500 percent weekly increase in deaths. Worldometer recorded 32 deaths in the country, a significant increase from the two deaths reported the previous week.
Sri Lanka follows, with a 200 percent weekly growth in deaths. Six deaths were reported, compared to two the previous week.
Rounding out the top five are Vietnam with four deaths (a 100% increase), Lebanon with eight deaths (a 100% increase), and Singapore with a 58.33% increase in deaths.
Considering the number of reported deaths, Taiwan recorded the highest number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days, with 440 fatalities. This represents a 16.4% increase compared to the previous week. Following Taiwan, Japan reported 396 deaths (a 5.49% decrease), the Philippines 267 deaths (an 8.1% increase), South Korea 169 deaths (a 4.32% increase), and Indonesia 117 deaths (a 13.59% increase).
A total of 1,704 deaths were recorded in Asia over the past seven days. This accounts for 18.48 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, which totaled 9,223. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day period, which recorded 1,573 deaths.
