The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 3.95 million cases by Thursday, August 4, 2022. Cameroon recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 32.81 percent. GISAID recorded 506 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region decreased by 0.39 percent compared to the previous day.
Following Cameroon is Japan, with weekly Omicron case growth reaching 21.9 percent. Daily Omicron cases in Japan increased by 0.18 percent compared to the previous day, totaling 154,210 cases.
Next, Hong Kong reported 5,936 additional Omicron cases (up 17.08%), Italy saw a 10.56 percent increase to 47,749 cases compared to the previous week, and Malaysia reported 13,428 additional Omicron cases (up 7.44%).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, 17,168 Omicron cases were recorded by yesterday, a 0.01 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
