The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.12 million cases by Tuesday, September 20, 2022. Tunisia recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 173.58 percent. GISAID recorded 145 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 173.58 percent compared to the previous day.
Russia followed in second place. Compared to the previous week, Omicron cases in the country increased by 19.97 percent. The daily increase in Omicron cases rose by 3.7 percent compared to the previous day, which recorded 9,482 cases.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Peru increased by 10.7 percent to 15,934 cases compared to the previous week; in Turkey, Omicron cases increased by 10.09 percent to 17,480 cases compared to the previous week; and in Brunei Darussalam, there were 2,733 additional Omicron cases (a 9.85% increase).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 22,039, a 0.1 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
