The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) states that Indonesian domestic tourism is still dominated by travel from Java Island.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, specifically in 2019, BPS reported that the majority of domestic tourist trips originated from provinces on Java Island, reaching 63.5%.
"This dominance continues to increase, even after the pandemic, with 76.54% of total domestic tourist trips in 2022 originating from Java Island," said BPS in its official statement quoted on Friday (5/5/2023).
Based on the province of origin, East Java recorded the highest number of trips in 2022 at 198.91 million trips, or 27.07% of the total 734.86 million domestic tourist trips in Indonesia.
The number of trips from East Java increased by 25.41% compared to the previous year.

The other two Javanese provinces, West Java and Central Java, also recorded a significant number of domestic tourist trips, with 128.67 million trips (17.51%) and 103.99 million trips (14.15%), respectively.
BPS observes that although these three Javanese provinces consistently rank as the top three origins of domestic tourist trips, the travel patterns in 2022 show a change compared to the pre-Covid-19 pandemic period.
In 2019, West Java contributed the largest number of domestic tourist trips, followed by those originating from East Java and Central Java.
