The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.42 million cases by Friday, October 7, 2022. Egypt reported the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 45.76 percent. GISAID recorded 860 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 45.76 percent compared to the previous day.
Puerto Rico followed in second place. Compared to the previous week, the increase in Omicron cases in this country grew by 10.15 percent, with 8,869 new cases reported. Daily statistics show a 0.07 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, with 8,863 cases recorded.
Next is Peru with 17,888 additional Omicron cases (up 9.27%), followed by the Dominican Republic with an 8.72 percent increase to 773 cases compared to the previous week, and Estonia with a 5.68 percent increase to 5,468 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, a total of 23,615 Omicron cases were recorded, a 0.08 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
