The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 6.59 million cases by Friday, February 24, 2023. The Philippines leads with a weekly increase in Omicron cases of 6.37 percent, totaling 13,351 cases according to GISAID. Daily cases in the country increased by 0.05 percent compared to the previous day.
Japan follows, recording a 3.26 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily Omicron cases in Japan rose by 0.02 percent compared to the previous day.
Next, China (PRC) reported 15,200 additional Omicron cases (a 3.09% increase), Brazil saw a 2.9 percent increase to 100,310 cases compared to the previous week, and Namibia reported 771 additional Omicron cases (a 2.66% increase).
In Indonesia, a total of 34,428 Omicron cases have been recorded, representing a 0.25 percent increase compared to the previous day. Omicron cases in Indonesia have been steadily rising since it was first monitored.
