Since the outbreak of the Israeli-Hamas war on October 7, 2023, most Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been forced to live in displacement camps.
The poor conditions in these camps put them at risk of various diseases.
According to World Health Organization (WHO) data reported by *Al Jazeera*, several infectious diseases are spreading in the Gaza Strip displacement camps.
Until November 10, 2023, the most commonly reported illness was upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) with an estimated 54,866 cases, exhibiting symptoms such as runny nose, cough, and sore throat.
“Respiratory illnesses were the sixth most common cause of death in the Gaza Strip before the outbreak of war last month,” wrote *Al Jazeera* in its report on Friday, November 10, 2023.
“In the case of respiratory infections, while these illnesses are generally caused by viruses, a study on the impact of the war in Gaza also found that respiratory illnesses were caused by inhaling toxic gases from military activities,” it continued.
Another prevalent illness among Gaza residents is diarrhea, with over 33,551 reported cases. The WHO noted that half of these diarrhea cases affected children under five years old.
“Drinking contaminated water is one of the main reasons behind diarrhea,” wrote *Al Jazeera*.
Other illnesses include 12,635 cases of skin rashes, 8,944 cases of scabies and lice, and 1,005 cases of chickenpox. These diseases affect not only children but also adults in the displacement camps.
“Incomplete disease surveillance systems, inadequate internet and cellular phone connectivity, and disrupted medical services also complicate the monitoring or response to infectious diseases,” said *Al Jazeera*.
