The North Korean government finally reported its first case of COVID-19 on Friday, May 13, 2022.
According to Worldometers, the number of new COVID-19 cases in North Korea reached 1,483,060 in one week, up to Thursday, May 18, 2022. This represents a 148,306,000% increase compared to the previous week, when there were no reported cases.
Several COVID-19 patients in North Korea reportedly exhibited fever symptoms, with some confirmed to have the Omicron variant. These fever cases were largely concentrated in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital.
The week's surge in COVID-19 cases in North Korea was the highest in Asia. Taiwan came in second, with a 63% increase to 447,820 cases.
Japan and South Korea followed in third and fourth place, respectively, with 266,193 and 215,534 new cases reported over the week.
Indonesia ranked 16th in Asia with the highest number of new COVID-19 cases, reporting 2,064 cases in a week.
The public needs to remain vigilant against COVID-19 transmission. Therefore, adherence to the 3M health protocol is mandatory: wearing a mask, maintaining physical distance, and washing hands with soap. Furthermore, people are urged to avoid crowds and reduce mobility.
