This week, four countries still recorded an increase in deaths, and five others recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Israel, India, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Thailand. The total deaths in these five countries as of Thursday, April 20, 2023, amounted to 274, with weekly growth above 0 percent.
Israel recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 3,800 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded 39 deaths, a 2.63 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Following Israel is India, with weekly death growth reaching 78.16 percent. Daily death data in this country increased by 13.97% compared to the previous day, which recorded 136 deaths.
Next, deaths in Indonesia increased by 62.79%, Hong Kong recorded eight deaths (up 33.33%), and Thailand recorded two deaths (unchanged from the previous day).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in India with 155 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 78.16% compared to the previous week. Following India, Japan reported the second highest number of deaths with 122 (down 24.69%), Indonesia recorded 70 deaths (up 62.79%), Israel with 39 deaths (up 3,800%), and South Korea with 36 deaths (down 40%).
Total deaths in Asia over the last seven days were recorded at 451. This accounts for 18.17 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 2,482. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 411 deaths.
