Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Thursday, January 22, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday (22/1/2026) at 18:15 WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 17 times.

Reporting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed reached None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

No visual eruption was observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 22, 2026, from 12:00-18:00 WIB, showed 31 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-22 millimeters and earthquake durations of 68-157 seconds.

Then, 2 rockfall earthquakes with an amplitude of 3 mm and earthquake durations of 49-55 seconds, and 5 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and earthquake durations of 50-69 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond this distance, the public is advised not to engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river borders) along Besuk Kobokan, as there is potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 299 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most with 163 eruptions.
