The European Union is the Largest Buyer of Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 Vaccines

The European Union had purchased 1.6 billion doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine by July 9, 2021. This is the largest amount purchased by any country or region, equivalent to 49.9% of the total global purchases.

Pfizer/BioNTech is one of the vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Therefore, residents of the EU or those from other countries who have received this vaccine can visit the EU without mandatory self-isolation upon arrival.

Several other countries have also ordered the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. The United States and Brazil purchased 300 million and 200 million doses respectively. Japan ordered 194 million doses, Canada 105 million doses, and the United Kingdom and China 100 million doses each.

Other countries purchased less than 100 million doses. For example, South Korea ordered 66 million doses, Turkey 64.5 million doses, and the African Union 50 million doses.

The Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has also granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine in Indonesia. The vaccine's efficacy is 100% for ages 12-15 and 95.5% for ages 16 and above.
