Prevalence Rate of Inadequate Food Consumption in Indonesia 2017-2024

Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the prevalence of undernourishment in Indonesia from 2017 to 2024 stagnated at 8%.

For information, BPS defines the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) as the proportion of a population in a region consuming food lower than the standard energy requirement for a healthy, active, and productive life, expressed as a percentage.

PoU is influenced by various factors, including: household income, number of family members, expenditure, food prices and availability, and nutrition knowledge.

In 2017, the prevalence of undernourishment in Indonesia was 8.23%. In 2019, the prevalence of undernourishment decreased to 7.63%.

In 2022, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the prevalence of undernourishment rose to 10.21%. Meanwhile, in 2024, the prevalence of undernourishment decreased to 8.27%.

Specifically in 2024, Central Papua Province ranked first as the region with the highest prevalence of undernourishment, at 37.69%.

This was followed by Maluku Province (31.66%), South Papua Province (29.26%), North Maluku Province (28.44%), and Highland Papua Province (27.26%).
