The global culinary guide website, Taste Atlas, released a list of the 10 best pancakes in Southeast Asia in February 2024.
This list includes several Indonesian culinary specialties, one of which is serabi, which achieved a score of 4.3 out of 5 points. This score placed this traditional snack as the second-best pancake in Southeast Asia according to Taste Atlas.
Surabi is a traditional pancake from the Nusantara archipelago, usually made from rice flour and coconut milk or grated coconut. Besides sweet versions, it can also be served savory.
Following closely is dadar gulung, which also received a score of 4.3 points. As its name suggests, this traditional dessert is made from a thin crepe of rice flour batter, filled with grated coconut and palm sugar, then rolled up.
“Besides Indonesia, this colorful and attractive dessert can also be found in various other countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka,” wrote Taste Atlas in its report.
In addition to these two Indonesian traditional pancakes, kue ape also made the list. Kue ape has a soft texture in the middle and a crispy edge.
The top-ranked pancake in Southeast Asia is khanom khrok. This Thai dessert achieved a score of 4.5 points.
Similar to serabi, khanom khrok is made from a batter of rice flour and coconut milk. The batter can be enhanced with fillings such as custard, taro, corn, pumpkin, or scallions.
