National Rice Production Projection

Based on data from the Ministry of Agriculture in the 2015 Rice Outlook, Indonesian rice production in 2017 reached 46.16 million tons. Rice consumption in the same year reached 32.7 million tons, resulting in a national rice surplus of 11.9 million tons after deducting non-food usage.

This year, rice production is estimated to reach 47.4 million tons with consumption at 33.1 million tons, again resulting in a surplus of 12.7 million tons. Then, in 2019, production is projected to increase to 48.6 million tons with consumption at 33.5 million tons, resulting in a surplus of 13.5 million tons.

The government initially decided to import 500,000 tons of rice through PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia Persero (PPI). This step was taken after domestic rice prices increased due to concerns about dwindling rice supplies in the market. However, the government ultimately canceled PPI's rice import and appointed the state-owned logistics company, Perusahaan Umum Badan Urusan Logistik, to import rice from abroad.
