India, Indonesia's Largest Cocoa Export Market in 2022

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia's cocoa production reached 650,600 tons in 2022. This figure is down 5.46% year-on-year (yoy) from 2021, which reached 706,500 tons.

BPS stated that most of Indonesia's cocoa production is exported internationally, with the remainder marketed domestically. Indonesia's cocoa exports reach five continents: Asia, Africa, Oceania, America, and Europe, with the main share in Asia.

India was the largest export destination for cocoa, with an export volume of 68,210 tons, or approximately 17.70% of Indonesia's total cocoa export volume, valued at US$210.91 million in 2022.

Next is the United States, with a 12.49% export share last year, followed by Malaysia with a 12.20% export contribution.

Other major destinations include China and Australia, with export shares of 9.53% and 4.75%, respectively.

BPS explained that total cocoa exports to these five countries reached 56.68% of Indonesia's total cocoa exports in 2022. The remaining 43.32% was exported to other regions.

Based on producing provinces, Central Sulawesi led with the highest production, accounting for 20.11% of national total production.

Southeast Sulawesi was the second largest producer at 16.08%, followed by South Sulawesi at 13.36%.

According to the producing entity, this cocoa ingredient was mostly produced by smallholder farmers (PR), reaching 649,390 tons in 2022. This was followed by large private estates (PBS) at 1,160 tons and state-owned large estates at only 5 tons.
