Indonesia's Slaughter Cattle Population, 2015-2024

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia's population of slaughter cattle reached 11.7 million head in 2024. This figure is up from 10.82 million head in 2023.

Despite the increase, the 2024 figure shows a drastic decrease compared to 2015, which was recorded at 15.4 million head.

Similarly, the numbers from 2016 to 2022 reached 16 million to 17 million head. BPS recorded the highest number of slaughter cattle in 2021, reaching 17.97 million head.

• 2016: 16,004,097 head
• 2017: 16,429,102 head
• 2018: 16,432,945 head
• 2019: 16,930,025 head
• 2020: 17,440,393 head
• 2021: 17,977,214 head
• 2022: 17,602,538 head
• 2023: 10,828,733 head
• 2024: 11,749,780 head

Previously, the Coordinating Minister for Food of the Republic of Indonesia, Zulkifli Hasan, stated that the government no longer imposes import quotas on live cattle. He said importers can import live cattle for various purposes, such as slaughter, fattening, and milk production.

At the end of January 2025, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, Sudaryono, also stated that Indonesia will import 2 million live cattle until 2029. The aim is to meet the supply of meat and milk.

However, until June 2025, the import of dairy cattle, in particular, is still hampered by the readiness of land and local farming partners.
