Indonesian Fresh Milk Production Data 2003-2023

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia produced 837,200 tons of fresh milk in 2023.

Volume increased by 1.57% compared to 2022, but it remains lower than the period from 2016 to 2021, as shown in the graph.

In 2023, East Java was the largest producer of fresh milk, with a volume of 456,300 tons, or 54.5% of national total production.

This was followed by West Java, which produced 268,500 tons of fresh milk; Central Java, 89,500 tons; and North Sumatra, 9,200 tons.

Meanwhile, 18 provinces in Indonesia did not produce any fresh milk at all in 2023, mostly in Eastern Indonesia.

The government is currently considering increasing the production of "fish milk," a protein-rich beverage resembling milk that is processed from fish meat.

According to the Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs, Teten Masduki, "fish milk" could fulfill the supply for the free milk program from President-elect Prabowo Subianto.

"Achieving self-sufficiency in fresh cow's milk is almost impossible due to land limitations. Furthermore, one of the advantages of fish milk is that it is lactose-free," said Teten at the DPR Building, Jakarta, as reported by *Katadata*, Wednesday (August 11, 2024).

Teten admitted he hasn't yet submitted this suggestion to the President-elect. However, he reminded that the free milk program should involve MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises).
