The Indonesian government has officially banned the export of cooking oil and its raw materials starting April 28, 2022, until further notice.

This export ban applies to crude palm oil (CPO) and several of its derivative products, namely used cooking oil, refined-bleach-deodorized palm oil (RBDPO), palm oil mill effluent (POME), and refined palm oil (RPO).

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik), exports of RPO alone reached US$7.79 billion in 2021.

The value of RPO exports in 2021 surged 108% from the previous year, which amounted to US$3.74 billion.

Meanwhile, during the 2017-2020 period, the value of RPO exports ranged from US$2 billion to US$3 billion per year, as shown in the graph.

Despite the significant trade value, the government has banned the export of various palm oil products starting today to increase domestic cooking oil stocks.

This step was taken after cooking oil became scarce, and the price of bulk cooking oil has not yet fallen to the government-set Highest Retail Price (HET) of Rp14,000 per liter.
