National sugar consumption projections for the 2016-2020 period show a downward trend. Data from the 2016 Sugarcane Outlook of the Directorate General of Information and Communication Technology, Ministry of Agriculture, indicates that sugar consumption reached 3.01 million tons in 2016 but is projected to be only 2.66 million tons in 2020, representing an average annual decrease of approximately 3 percent.
Household sugar consumption amounted to 1.54 million tons in 2016 and is projected to decrease to 1.36 million tons in 2020. Industrial sugar consumption was 1.42 million tons in 2016 and is projected to fall to 1.25 million tons in 2020. Similarly, other consumption will decrease from 54,630 tons to 48,293 tons.
Based on projections, sugarcane production in 2020 will reach 2.8 million tons. Meanwhile, projected direct sugar consumption is only 1.36 million tons. However, this consumption projection does not reflect actual sugar consumption because it uses Susenas consumption data. Using information from the Input-Output table, which shows that household consumption accounts for 51.2 percent of total sugar consumption, the industry (restaurants and services) accounts for 46.98 percent, and other consumption accounts for 1.82 percent, the projected national sugar consumption in 2020 is 2.66 million tons.
