The price of fresh broiler chicken in Indonesia soared in May 2022, reaching an average of Rp40,900 per kilogram. However, from the end of the second quarter to the third quarter of 2022, the trend continued to decline.
According to a report from the National Strategic Food Price Information Center, the average price of broiler chicken on September 30, 2022, was Rp34,300 per kilogram. This is the lowest price since the beginning of the year.
However, the price of chicken varies significantly by region. East Nusa Tenggara recorded the highest price of broiler chicken on September 30, 2022, at Rp47,850 per kilogram.
In South Kalimantan and Maluku, the price of broiler chicken was Rp45,150 per kilogram and Rp41,600 per kilogram, respectively. In Papua and West Papua, the prices were Rp41,300 per kilogram and Rp41,050 per kilogram, respectively.
Meanwhile, the cheapest broiler chicken price on September 30, 2022, was recorded in Gorontalo at Rp20,150 per kilogram.
The Head of the National Food Agency, Arief Prasetyo Adi, stated that chicken price stabilization is necessary to prevent farmers from going bankrupt and to reduce the decline in domestic chicken supply. This could potentially cause a food crisis in the country.
"Price stability and fairness will affect the sustainability of businesses and the enthusiasm of micro and small independent poultry farmers in running their farming businesses," said Arief, as quoted from Katadata.co.id, Thursday (29/9/2022).
Previously, Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan also explained the reasons for the decline in broiler chicken prices in Indonesia.
"The price fluctuations are suspected to be due to uneven distribution constraints and supply-demand conditions, where production is greater than demand," said Zulkifli, as quoted from Bisnis.com, Friday (2/9/2022).
