Indonesia Produced 307,200 Tons of Ginger in 2021

Ginger is one of the biopharmaceutical plant commodities that significantly contributes to horticultural production in Indonesia.

According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia produced 307,240 tons of ginger in 2021. This figure increased by 67.42% from 183,520 tons in 2020.

2021 was a year where ginger production saw a significant increase. Prior to this, since 2017, ginger production in Indonesia had been declining.

Ginger production in Indonesia was only 216,590 tons in 2017. This number decreased to 174,380 tons by 2019.

When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, people sought ginger as an alternative medicine and to boost their immunity. National ginger production began to increase in 2020 and increased significantly again last year.

Along with the increase in production, the harvested area of ginger domestically rose by 42.39%, from 7,450 hectares in 2020 to 10,610 hectares in 2021.

Ginger production in 2021 was highest in the second quarter, reaching 112,080 tons with a harvested area of 3,760 hectares.

South Sulawesi was the province with the largest ginger production in Indonesia, contributing 9.79% to national production, reaching 60,790 tons with a harvested area of 1,510 hectares.

This was followed by North Sumatra, which contributed 52,240 tons or 17% with a harvested area of 1,130 hectares. Meanwhile, East Java contributed 43,830 tons or 14.27% with a harvested area of 1,570 hectares.
