Fluctuations in Japan's Imports from Indonesia Over the Past Five Years

Data from Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows that the value of imports from Japan to Indonesia fluctuated over the past five years.

In 2018, the import value reached US$17.97 billion. A year later, it decreased by 12.85% to US$15.66 billion.

The 2019 figure was not as low as 2020, which contributed only US$10.67 billion, a 31.86% drop. The decrease in import value in 2020 is attributed to mobility restrictions, including international trade activities, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Global trade activity gradually recovered in 2021. The value of Japanese imports to Indonesia increased to US$14.64 billion.

The latest annual import data for 2022 shows a further increase to US$17.17 billion. Although relatively high, this value has not yet surpassed the 2018 achievement.

BPS states that Japan is one of the top 10 trading partners or major importers to Indonesia in 2021-2022. Other countries in this group include China, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, the United States, Thailand, Australia, India, and Saudi Arabia.

BPS adds that Indonesian imports from Japan are still dominated by machinery and mechanical appliances and parts, valued at US$3.49 billion in 2022. This commodity increased by 15.33% (year-on-year/yoy) and accounted for 20.32% of total imports from Japan.

The second largest commodity was vehicles and parts, worth US$2.79 billion, or a 37.37% increase (yoy). The third largest commodity was iron and steel, valued at US$2.58 billion.
