Number of Mobile Phone Subscribers in Indonesia 2018-2023

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the number of cellular phone subscribers in Indonesia reached 352.16 million in 2023, a 2.79% increase year-on-year (YoY).

Details show that in 2023, the number of prepaid cellular phone subscribers grew by 3.13% (YoY) to 342.69 million, while postpaid cellular phone subscribers decreased by 8.32% (YoY) to 9.47 million.

The number of cellular phone subscribers has exceeded the population, which totaled approximately 278 million in 2023. This means that, on average, each Indonesian possesses more than one cellular phone number.

The number of cellular phone subscribers sharply decreased by more than 26% (YoY) in 2016 due to the crackdown on inactive numbers and the mandatory registration of subscriber identities.

According to BPS data, the percentage of the population owning a cellular phone reached only 67.29% in 2023, down from 67.88% the previous year.

The province with the highest cellular phone ownership in 2023 was DKI Jakarta, reaching 82.47%. The lowest was Papua, at only 37.95%.

Telkomsel had the largest number of subscribers, with over 159 million subscribers in 2023.
